Women in TMU’s Aerospace Engineering Program Say More Representation is Needed

Many women in Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) aerospace engineering program say better representation is needed at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Wintta Ghebreiyesus, an aerospace engineering PhD candidate has done her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in aerospace engineering at the university. She estimated that in her time at TMU, women generally made up between 13 to 20 per cent of students in the program.

Inspired by World Access to Higher Education Day (WAHED), we need more representation among students pursuing careers in aerospace. This requires new ways of recruiting and retaining top female talent in aerospace. Whether it’s through promotional activities, hiring women at all levels of career, or fostering overall inclusive environments, there is no formula for diversity in the workplace. But it will require men as allies too, to address and break the stigma women face in aerospace and related fields. Check out Toronto Metropolitan University student newpaper’s The Eyeopener article titled Women in Aerospace Engineering Call for More Representation for a closer look.
